A frenzied weekend of Los Angeles sports playoff action comes to a finale at 3:00 p.m., as, dare I say, the best team currently calling Tinseltown home takes the ice for a chance at a sweep and a punched ticket to the Stanley Cup finals.

While the Kings are familiar with the Stanley Cup, last appearing as Gretzky’s team in 1993 against the Montreal Canadiens, they are seemingly in uncharted territory as this season’s eight-seed in the Western Conference.

So, how did they get here?

Los Angeles knocked off the Vancouver Canucks, winners of the Presidents’ Trophy in the Western Conference quarterfinals. That took a tidy five games to complete.

It was on to another top seed, but undaunted, Los Angeles blitzed the St. Louis Blues for a four-game sweep in the Western Conference semifinals.

And now? L.A. sits on the precipice of another sweep, this time over the Phoenix Coyotes, who, quite frankly, appear completely overwhelmed and overmatched.

Here is an incredible note (via NHL.com) about the Kings scintillating postseason run: They have taken 3-0 series leads in all three rounds, and after never having swept an opponent in their previous 43-year history

It might be 3-0, but Los Angeles can’t look past today or the Coyotes in general. Just ask the 2004 New York Yankees about doing that.

Puck drop is slated for 3:00 p.m. EST and the game will air live on NBC.

With so many Czech players constituting the Coyotes roster, I’d be remiss not to congratulate the Czech Republic for winning the bronze medal at the World Championships in Finland earlier today.

Yes, there is other hockey going on today. The Slovaks take on the Russians for the Gold Medal, starting shortly.

International hockey is a great product, so I’ll likely give you a few brief updates throughout the day. But, the focus will obviously stay on Game 4.

When today’s game is complete, the Staples Center will have hosted three NBA Playoff Games and one Stanley Cup Playoff game in less than 48 hours.

A tap of the stick to the “conversion crew” at the arena for getting the place prepared for four separate games, two different sports and thousands of paying fans. That’s not an easy job, whatsoever.

The only drawback? It did seem as though players were slipping during the NBA games yesterday due to the reapplication of logos on the floor and the likely condensation from the ice rink below.

At the beginning of the year, who would have thought the LA Kings had the best chance to win a championship if the Clippers and Lakers were in the discussion?

A quick look at the two goalies expected to start for their respective teams today. Here are their numbers in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Mike Smith (Phoenix): 8 wins, 6 losses, 2.02 GAA, .942 Sv% and 2 SO

Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles): 11 wins, 1 loss, 1.41 GAA*, .951 Sv%* and 2 SO

Notably, Quick was nominated as a Vezina finalist, but Smith was not. Most likely, that had a lot to do with the league featuring so many phenomenal goaltenders this year.

N.C. St. losing two DBs to transfer

Appearing on the wrong end of the post-spring depth chart, a pair of safeties have decided to take their collective leaves from North Carolina State.

Head coach Tom O’Brien announced Friday that Donald Coleman and Dean Haynes (pictured) have decided to transfer from his football program.

Coleman, a Princeton, NJ, native, has already graduated as a rising redshirt junior and would be eligible to play immediately if he decided to transfer to a Div. 1-A (FBS) program.  Haynes, who played his high school football in Georgia, would’ve been a redshirt junior in 2012 but, unlike Coleman, has not yet graduated.

In 2010 as a redshirt freshman, Haynes moved from defensive back to running back shortly before the start of the season and finished third on the team in rushing with 320 yards and three rushing touchdowns.  He was moved back to defense last year.

Both players played mainly on special teams in 2011.

Additionally, quarterback Brian Taylor (no relation), who was third on the spring depth chart, has decided to quit playing football but will remain in school.

NHL Playoffs 2012: Would a Sweep Really Serve the Kings’ Best Interest?

Imagine the Los Angeles Kings polish off the Phoenix Coyotes and get it over with in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals on Sunday. Now imagine it takes a full week longer for the Eastern Conference finals to wrap up as the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils push one another to Game 7.

Of all the possibilities for the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, that combination of events is one of the most realistic. For the Kings, this would mean an improbable 12-1 romp through the conference portion of the dance, followed by roughly 10 or 11 days before the final series commences.

For the opposition, it would mean either three or four days of rest, refocusing and turning the page for either a Rangers team coming off the maximum 21 games or a Devils team with 19 games already on its log.

Advantage Los Angeles? Not necessarily.

The notion that a disproportionately protracted layoff between playoff rounds comes back to drop the other skate on a previously dominant team probably gets more credit than it deserves. With that said, it does have some credibility based on historical evidence, both in hockey and in other sports.

The NBA has at least two pieces of evidence that favors the other side of this debate. In 2001, the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers waited 10 days after sweeping the San Antonio Spurs to start clashing with the Philadelphia 76ers, who were three days removed from a Game 7 triumph over Milwaukee. The Lakers defended their crown in five games.

The same held true for the 1996 Chicago Bulls, who were not rusty in the least when they topped the Seattle Supersonics.

But in five of the last seven times any North American major sports championship had one finalist coming off a seven-game victory and the other a sweep, fresher momentum has prevailed over fresher legs.

Leading up to the 2007 World Series, the Cinderella Colorado Rockies went 7-0 in the NLDS and NLCS, clinching their pennant six days before the opposing Boston Red Sox clinched theirs.

The Rockies ultimately needed to wait nine days between their pennant-clincher against Arizona and the World Series opener, whereas the Sox had a three-day layoff. Boston would sweep Colorado.

The same scenario occurred a year prior, when the Detroit Tigers swept the Oakland Athletics for the American League pennant while the National League champion St. Louis Cardinals prevailed only after the New York Mets pushed them to the limit. In the battle for the major league title, St. Louis was victorious against Detroit, four games to one.

Before that, in 1988, the Athletics swept their way to the AL pennant while the Los Angeles Dodgers went to seven games in the NLCS. Again, the eventual world champion was the team that had more work in the preceding round.

In 1998, the NBA’s Utah Jazz swept the Lakers and waited for the Bulls to take down Indiana in Game 7. Chicago won the league title in six games.

The last time a Stanley Cup tournament saw one conference final end in a sweep and another in seven games―and the only time it has ever happened in the four-round playoff era―was in 2003.

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim forged a run to the Cup final not unlike the one their regional rivals are producing this season, sweeping the Minnesota Wild to improve to 12-2.

The Ducks clinched the Campbell Bowl on May 16 of that year. Seven nights later, the Devils vanquished the Senators in Ottawa.

When the Ducks and Devils converged in East Rutherford for Game 1 of their final series, it had been 11 nights since Anaheim’s previous extramural engagement. New Jersey would win each of the first two games, 3-0, and ultimately claimed the Cup in a seven-game bout that saw the home team win every installment.

If this year’s Kings act like the Ducks of the past and the current edition of the Devils act like its 2003 predecessor, it would not be a stretch to bank on the same basic result.

With the Rangers, there would be more room for doubt, although their pack-it-in approach could sufficiently stifle the L.A. strike force without expending too much energy to get the better of Jonathan Quick.

For their own sake, the Kings most naturally would prefer to abolish the Coyotes at the earliest possible chance. But they must to be mindful that the potential 10- or 11-day interlude between games will be a challenge upgrade from the six- and seven-day breaks that separated the first and second and second and third rounds.

If it does eliminate Phoenix in Game 4 this Sunday, Los Angeles will need to formulate its own preparation kit to stave off fatal frostbite in the final.

Hoke allows ‘we haven’t done our job’ vs. in-state rival

Posted by John Taylor on May 19, 2012, 10:56 AM EDT

wpid brady hoke Hoke allows ‘we haven’t done our job’ vs. in state rival AP

Last month, Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio offered up some fresh bulletin board material when asked about going up against big-brother Michigan on the recruiting trail.

“We’re laying in the weeds,” Dantonio said at the time. “We’ve beat Michigan the last four years. So where’s the threat?”

Friday, Wolverines head coach Brady Hoke was asked about the shot across UM’s bow during a radio interview.  Instead of huffing and puffing over the crack, Hoke refreshingly allowed that, yeah, his football team has some on-the-field work to do against the Spartans.

“They’ve beat Michigan the last four years, and we need to do something about it,” Hoke said by way of AnnArbor.com. “I mean, we have to do our job. We haven’t done our job.”

Only one of those four wins came at the expense of Hoke, of course, with the other three laying squarely at the feet of the deposed Rich Rodriguez.  Hoke ended a seven-game non-winning streak against Ohio State in his first season in Ann Arbor last year, but couldn’t do the same with the MSU streak in East Lansing.

The Wolverines’ will get the Spartans at the Big House in late October this year, although Hoke’s program will have a couple of other hurdles to get past — Alabama, Notre Dame in South Bend chief among them — before even worrying about slaying his second significant losing streak at the school.

“To be honest with you, we try and take it one week at a time, one game at a time, and we’ve got better things to worry about here at Michigan, and to talk about, than what other people may think or say,” the coach said.
